About the Event

Please join us for a rare appearance by the poet, writer, teacher and scholar JEANNE MINAHAN MCGINN as she shares with us her practice for listening to poetry. Guests are invited to join us for an overview luncheon with Dr. Minahan at The Sailfish Club of Florida on Thursday, March 3 and then also for an expanded instructional morning workshop on Friday, March 4 in the gardens at Villa dei Fiori on Seminole Avenue in Palm Beach. Creatives of all levels and mediums are welcome and will enjoy much from this extraordinary experience!

Jeanne Minahan’s poems seek to reinscribe presence on absence. Each poem riddles place and voice in a lover’s quarrel with temporality that causes us to question how we recognize a place or a voice we have never encountered before. How do new sounds evoke hums we know?

Minahan’s body of work has taken a non-typical trajectory as composers, musicians, and concert-goers have been her primary audience. Her poems have been performed in over 40 concerts throughout North America and in Paris. Discography includes Grammy and Pulitzer-prize winning composer Jennifer Higdon’s setting of “The Singing Rooms” with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and composer Michael Djupstrom’s setting of “Oars in Water,” recorded by the Brooklyn Art Song Society.

Soprano Emily Albrink has commissioned Minahan and composer Rene Orth to compose a song cycle that will premier in May, 2022. This spring, Minahan will conduct a two-day reading and workshop for the Coudert Institute in West Palm Beach. She has been published in Potomac Review, Cimarron Review, and Women's Review of Books and other journals.

Minahan earned her B.A. from Bucknell University and studied as a Rotary International Graduate Fellow at the University College Cork, Ireland, where she earned an M.A. She completed her Ph.D. at Bryn Mawr College.  Jeanne Minahan, the pen name of Jeanne Minahan McGinn, teaches creative writing and literature at the Curtis Institute of Music, where she holds the Ruth W. and A. Morris Williams Jr. Chair in the Liberal Arts and is Senior Associate Dean.
